The four elements

The elements are the oldest classification in astrology and still the most useful. They sort the twelve signs into four groups of three, and what a group shares is not a set of traits but a way of taking in the world - what a sign treats as real.

Fire works from instinct and momentum. Earth works from what can be touched, measured and kept. Air works from pattern and idea. Water works from feeling and undercurrent. None is better than another, and a chart heavy in one is not stronger than a balanced one - it is more concentrated, which cuts both ways.

The elements also pair up. Fire and Air reinforce each other, as do Earth and Water; the other combinations take more conscious work. That single fact drives most of what compatibility readings are actually saying.
